A Light on the Hill

Investing in the Bank – the Foodbank that is

Do you donate corn, beetroot and a packet of pasta every year? Nothing wrong with that! This year “10 Things a Food Pantry Needs but Won’t Ask For” caught my eye when it flashed up on my Facebook feed. I pondered it for awhile and thought I should share that with BPUC. Then the reasoned part of my brain kicked in and thought why not call UnitingCare Wesley Bowden Community Foodbank and ask them what they need. So I did…here is what we discussed:

  1. Baby products – especially nappies and baby formula. These are really expensive, essentials and babies go through them really Baby shampoo, baby wipes, baby food etc. are also great ways to support young families.
  2. Toiletries – grocery stores often donate food that is surplus and has an expiry date but toilet paper, toothpaste, soap, deodorant, shampoo and such last a long time so aren’t donated so often. We all need it every day. Why not consider something from the bathroom aisle.
  3. Feminine Hygiene products – can you imagine being worried about being able to afford these? Pads, tampons, panty liners are all needed.
  4. Some of the standards – soup – this is a complete meal in one pack and nothing needs to be added. Canned fruit because it makes a great dessert. Great easy options!
  5. Chocolate bars – at Christmas time this is a little luxury. People don’t need it but it brings joy. (Here’s a hint: Cadbury’s Favourites are on sale at Foodland on O’Connell Street now!)
  6. Long life milk – this is an essential that is much needed for tea, coffee, cereal as well as cooking. A really helpful item.
  7. Socks – having new socks brings comfort and support for tired feet.
  8. Crackers, tortillas and corn chips – these last a long time and everyone loves them.
  9. Spices – these are expensive but can make an otherwise bland meal delicious!
  10. Anything that might brighten your Christmas will likely brighten Christmas for someone else…

Let’s brighten the tree in the foyer and cover it with decorations! When you do your food shopping this week why not pick up a couple of items or fill an extra green bag to donate. If you want to go the extra mile with giving why not consider volunteering to deliver some of the Brougham Place donations? We can share the love this Christmas.
