A Light on the Hill

Photos: Season of Creation 2015

September is the Season of Creation at Brougham Place.

The Season of Creation is a wonderful time in the life of the church when we explore our relationship to nature and God’s call to be stewards of creation. This year we are going to do this through the lens of hearing sacred stories from the Australian Land. Rev Denise Champion explains that the stories, or Muda in Adnyamathanha, teach us three particular things:[1]

They teach about the rules for living, how to live in the right way with each other, which it seems to me is righteous living.

They teach us about our environment. A Muda puts us in the place so that we have a bit of a mind picture of what does this place look like. What’s in this place? Is there a big hill? Is there water there? It’s trying to get the hearers to get a description of this place where the story is and what it look like because that’s really important. That will help you engage then with that environment.

And the other thing they teach us about is the spiritual world. Now that’s really interesting because we don’t mention the word ‘God’ in our Muda but Adnyamathanha people and Aboriginal people in general have a very strong sense of connection with the Creator and with all our creation. When we talk about the Creator Spirit we use different names that talk about different creator beings, big ones that made things.
