Call to Worship

Come, in faith and humility as an open community, accepting each other in our diversity. For we all have strengths and weaknesses.
We come, thanking God!

John Howell. Used by permission.

We Sing: Where Wide Sky Rolls Down

  1. Where wide sky rolls down and touches red sand,
where sun turns to gold the grass of the land,
let spinifex, mulga and waterhole tell
their joy in the One who made everything well.

  2. Where rain-forest calm meets reef, tide and storm,
where green things grow lush and oceans are warm,
let every sea-creature and tropical bird
exult in the light of the life-giving Word.

  3. Where red gum and creek cross hillside and plain,
where cool tree-ferns rise to welcome the rain,
let bushland, farm, mountain-top, all of their days
delight in the Spirit who formed them for praise.

  4. Now, people of faith, come gather around
with songs to be shared, for blessings abound!
Australians, whatever your culture or race,
come, lift up your hearts to the Giver of grace.

Prayer of Confession

… We pray that we may have the courage to go and do whatever you ask of us, certain that we never act alone.
Loving God, renew and restore us in the image of Christ,
so that all will see your glory and grace.
In his name, we pray. Amen.

Words of Assurance

Jesus shows us how to shake off the dust, to let go of the things that will weigh us down for the journey ahead. You do not have to carry your sins, your failures, your regrets, they are forgiven. So, shake off the dust, embrace your forgiveness, embrace the creative new possibilities that are now opening up for you. Your sins are forgiven.
Thanks be to God, Amen.

Passing of the Peace

May the peace of God be with you.
And also with you.

We Sing: We Are Marching

  1. We are marching in the light of God,
we are marching in the light of God.
We are marching in the light of God,
we are marching in the light of God.
We are marching, marching, we are marching, Oo
we are marching in the light of God.
We are marching, marching, we are marching, Oo
we are marching in the light of God.

  2. We are living in the love of God

  3. We are moving in the power of God

  4. We are marching in the light of God

Words of Institution

Great Prayer of Thanksgiving

Let us give our thanks to God:

May God be with you.
And also with you.

Lift up your hearts!
We lift them up to our God.

Let us give thanks to God our Creator.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.

It is a right, good, and a joyful thing…

…So together with all of creation We sing to the one who has provided all we need:
Holy, holy, holy God of all that is,
All that was and all that will be.
Heaven and earth are full of your glory,
Hosanna in the highest.

For your kindness …

… and be his faithful followers, showing your love for the world.
Through Christ, with Christ, in Christ,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
all honour and glory is yours, God of Love,
for ever and ever, Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Let us pray together in the words that Jesus taught us:

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be Your name,

your Kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as in Heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins,

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial

and deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours

now and forever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread

We break this bread and take this cup so that we can all share in the life of Christ.

The gifts of God for the people of God.
The gifts of God for the people of God.

The Communion

Prayer After Communion

Let’s pray:
We thank you for this meal, God of love, and for welcoming us to this table.
May our lives be strengthened to follow the example of Jesus,
who called us to share love and to serve others.

May God’s Spirit draw us closer so that we may be found centred in God’s grace, enfolded in God’s love, and reflecting God’s light into the world.
Amen

Children may go downstairs for Sunday School. Parents, you are welcome to join your child in Sunday School if you feel your child may need your assistance. Alternatively, you may wish for your child to remain with you for the duration of worship. Activity packs are available at the entrances.

We Sing: Come and Find the Quiet Centre

  1. Come and find the quiet centre
in the crowded life we lead.
find the room for hope to enter,
find the frame where we are freed:
Clear the chaos and the clutter,
clear our eyes that we can see
all the things that really matter,
be at peace, and simply be.

  2. Silence is a friend who claims us,
cools the heat and slows the pace,
God it is who speaks and names us,
    knows our being, touches base,
    making space within our thinking,
lifting shades to show the sun,
    raising courage when we’re shrinking,
    finding scope for faith begun.

  3. In the Spirit let us travel,
    open to each other’s pain,
let our loves and fears unravel,
    celebrate the space we gain:
There’s a place for deepest dreaming,
there’s a time for heart to care,
    in the Spirit’s lively scheming
there is always room to spare.

Scripture Reading: Mark 6:1-13

[Jesus] left that place and came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him. On the Sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astounded. They said, “Where did this man get all this? What is this wisdom that has been given to him? What deeds of power are being done by his hands! Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon, and are not his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him. Then Jesus said to them, “Prophets are not without honor, except in their hometown and among their own kin and in their own house.” And he could do no deed of power there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and cured them. And he was amazed at their unbelief.

Then he went about among the villages teaching. He called the twelve and began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. He ordered them to take nothing for their journey except a staff: no bread, no bag, no money in their belts, but to wear sandals and not to put on two tunics. He said to them, “Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave the place. If any place will not welcome you and they refuse to hear you, as you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them.” So they went out and proclaimed that all should repent. They cast out many demons and anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.

Thanks be to God.

We Sing: Community of Christ

  1. Community of Christ,
who make the Cross your own,
live out your creed and risk your life
    for God alone:
the God who wears your face,
    to whom all worlds belong,
whose children are of every race
    and every song.

  2. Community of Christ,
    look past the Church’s door
and see the refugee, the hungry,
    and the poor.
    Take hands with the oppressed,
    the jobless in your street,
take towel and water, that you wash
    your neighbour’s feet.

  3. Community of Christ,
through whom the word must sound –
cry out for justice and for peace
    the whole world round:
    disarm the powers that war
    and all that can destroy,
turn bombs to bread, and tears of
    anguish into joy.

  4. When menace melts away,
so shall God’s will be done,
the climate of the world be peace
    and Christ its Sun;
    our currency be love
    and kindliness our law,
our food and faith be shared as one
    for evermore.

We Sing: God Who Sets Us on a Journey

  1. God who sets us on a journey
    To discover dream and grow
Lead us as You led Your people
    In the desert long ago
    Journey inward journey outward
Stir the spirit stretch the mind
Love for God and self and neighbour
Marks the way that Christ defined

  2. Exploration brings new insights
    Changes choices we must face
    Give us wisdom in deciding
    Mindful always of Your grace
Should we stumble lose our bearings
Find it hard to know what’s right
    We regain our true direction
    Focused on the Jesus light

  3. End our longing for the old days
Grant the vision that we lack
Once we’ve started on this journey
There can be no turning back
    Let us travel light discarding
    Excess baggage from our past
    Cherish only what’s essential
    Choosing treasure that will last

  4. When we set up camp and settle
To avoid love’s risk and pain
    You disturb complacent comfort
Pull the tent pegs up again
Keep us travelling in the knowledge
You are always at our side
Give us courage for the journey
Christ our goal and Christ our guide

Sending Forth and Benediction

God is summoning an alternative community of hope. So come, take your place, Know that hope deep in your being and carry it with you wherever you go. Let go of all the unnecessary baggage that will only weigh you down, and remain with those who welcome you, who welcome hope, who welcome the beautiful things God is doing.

May God be your endless possibility in the midst of your everyday humanity.

Go in peace, go with hope. Amen.

Postlude

Come and share morning tea together, in the basement. There are stairs behind the organ and a ramp between the church and the car park. You are welcome.
