Call to Worship

God, in the beginning you called forth light.
O Holy Mystery, you call forth life!

Christ, you called to the fishermen and they followed.
O Deepening Love, you call forth love!

Holy Spirit, you call to us from within.
O Life-Giving Voice, you call forth our gifts!
We hear. Our hearts are awakened, and we follow. Alleluia!

Prayer

We Sing: Come As You Are

  1. Come as you are: that’s how I want you.
Come as you are: feel quite at home,
Close to my heart, loved and forgiven.
Come as you are: why stand alone?

  2. ’No need to fear, love sets no limits;
    no need to fear, love never ends;
don’t run away shamed and disheartened,
rest in my love, trust me again.

  3. ’I came to call sinners, not just the righteous;
I came to bring peace, not to condemn.
Each time you fail to live by my promise,
why do you think I’d love you the less?

  4. ‘Come as you are; that’s how I love you;
come as you are, trust me again.
    Nothing can change the love that I bear you;
all will be well, just come as you are.’

Prayer of Confession

Our Response

We believe in God, who called light out of darkness, who calls all things into being.
Gracious God, it is you who call us to life, and you call us your Beloved. We hear your call, and we turn to you.

We live in the name and Spirit of Jesus, God’s Christ, who loved and taught, who called demons out of people, who called out injustice, and who calls forth the best in us.
Loving One, you call to your disciples to follow you.
We join ourselves to your life, your ministry, your death and resurrection.

We breathe the Holy Spirit, the spirit of life, who grants us gifts and calls them forth.
Living One, we open ourselves to the grace you give us to live lives worthy of the calling to which you call us:
lives of awe and gratitude, humility and love, forgiveness and mercy.

We give ourselves to you, to follow your leading moment by moment, day by day.
Loving God in Christ, you have called us by name, and we follow. Amen.

Passing of the Peace

May the peace of God be with you.
And also with you.

Scripture Reading: Mark 1:14-20

The Beginning of the Galilean Ministry

Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the good news of God and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.”

Jesus Calls the First Disciples

As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the sea, for they were fishers. And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of people.” And immediately they left their nets and followed him. As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. Immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.

Address

We Sing: Will You Come and Follow Me

  1. Will you come and follow me
if I but call your name?
Will you go where you don’t know
    and never be the same?
Will you let my love be shown,
will you let my name be known,
will you let my life be grown
In you and you in me?

  2. Will you leave yourself behind
if I but call your name?
Will you care for cruel and kind
    and never be the same?
Will you risk the hostile stare
should your life attract or scare?
Will you let me answer prayer
in you and you in me?

  3. Will you let the blinded see
if I but call your name?
Will you set the prisoners free
    and never be the same?
Will you kiss the leper clean,
and do such as this unseen,
and admit to what I mean
in you and you in me?

  4. Will you love the ‘you’ you hide
if I but call your name?
Will you quell the fear inside
    and never be the same?
Will you use the faith you’ve found
    to reshape the world around
through my sight and touch and sound
in you and you in me?

  5. Lord, your summons echoes true
when you but call my name.
Let me turn and follow you
    and never be the same.
    In your company I’ll go
where your love and footsteps show.
Thus I’ll move and live and grow
in you and you in me.

Offering Prayer

Prayers of the People

The Lord’s Prayer

…And now with the confidence of the children of God, let us pray the prayer Jesus taught us saying:

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be Your name,

your Kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as in Heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins,

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial

and deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours

now and forever. Amen.

We Sing: God Gives Us a Future

  1. God gives us a future,
    daring us to go
    into dreams and dangers
    on a path unknown.
    We will face tomorrow
    in the Spirit’s power,
we will let God change us,
    for new life starts now.

  2. We must leave behind us
    sins of yesterday,
    for God’s new beginning
    is a better way.
    Fear and doubt and habit
    must not hold us back:
    God gives hope, and insight,
    and the strength we lack.

  3. Holy Spirit, teach us
    how to read the signs,
    how to meet the challenge
    of our troubled times.
    Love us into action,
    stir us into prayer,
till we choose God’s life, and
    find our future there.

Shalom to you now, shalom, my friends.
May God’s full mercies bless you, my friends.
