Call to Worship

Come, to find a place set apart,
Come, to feel the pulse of your heart,
Come, to wonder, to pause, to thank,
Come, to fill an empty tank.

Come, to laugh at what is imposed,
Come, to open the door that is closed,
Come, to find an olive branch,
Come, to ask the world to dance.

Find from the compassionate shepherd bread for our deep hunger.

Come.

We sing: Come All You People

Including Lighting of the Candles

Come all you people,
Come and praise your maker
Come all you people,
Come and praise your maker
Come all you people,
Come and praise your maker
Come now and worship the Lord.

Opening Prayer

God, we have come to this place, a place where your presence has been sensed in the past and where we anticipate experiencing you close again. As we rest in your love this day, remind us that it is not in our striving, or our building, or our creating that you are made known. Your presence is in all places, and at all times, waiting for us to be awake to your wonder and love surrounding us.
Open our senses to your presence this day. Amen.

We Sing: Come and Find the Quiet Centre

  1. Come and find the quiet centre
in the crowded life we lead.
find the room for hope to enter,
find the frame where we are freed:
Clear the chaos and the clutter,
clear our eyes that we can see
all the things that really matter,
be at peace, and simply be.

  2. Silence is a friend who claims us,
cools the heat and slows the pace,
God it is who speaks and names us,
    knows our being, touches base,
    making space within our thinking,
lifting shades to show the sun,
    raising courage when we’re shrinking,
    finding scope for faith begun.

  3. In the Spirit let us travel,
    open to each other’s pain,
let our loves and fears unravel,
    celebrate the space we gain:
There’s a place for deepest dreaming,
there’s a time for heart to care,
    in the Spirit’s lively scheming
there is always room to spare.

Prayer of Confession

Loving and patient God, we live in a world that values productivity, success, wealth and gain. It is easy to get caught up with the endless cycle of needing more, doing more, striving for more, and achieving more.

Help us to stop!

Silence

Words of Grace

Our God of grace, knows our struggles with our own nature before we even have words to express them. We are reminded that we can rest in God’s love. Let us dwell in God’s presence that we may abide in Love.
Thanks be to God.

Passing of the Peace

The peace of our God be with you.
And also with you.

We sing: The Lord’s My Shepherd

  1. The Lord’s my Shepherd, I’ll not want;
He makes me lie in pastures green.
    He leads me by the still, still waters;
    His goodness restores my soul.

    Refrain
And I will trust in You alone.
and I will trust in You alone,
for Your endless mercy follows me,
Your goodness will lead me home.

  2. He guides my ways in righteousness,
    and He anoints my head with oil;
and my cup, it overflows with joy.
I feast on His pure delights.

    Refrain
And I will trust in You alone.
and I will trust in You alone,
for Your endless mercy follows me,
Your goodness will lead me home.

  3. And though I walk the darkest path,
I will not fear the evil one,
for You are with me, and Your rod and staff
are the comfort I need to know.

    Refrain
And I will trust in You alone.
and I will trust in You alone,
for Your endless mercy follows me,
Your goodness will lead me home.

Scripture Reading: Mark 6:30-34, 53-56

The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught. Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”

So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place. But many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them. When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.

When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret and anchored there. As soon as they got out of the boat, people recognized Jesus. They ran throughout that whole region and carried the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. And wherever he went – into villages, towns or countryside – they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed.

The Gospel of Christ, Light of the world.
Thanks be to God.

Prayers for Others

Response:
May we rest in your loving presence, O God,
as we pray and sigh together.

Collective deep breath followed by silence.

The Lord’s Prayer

Let us continue in prayer with the words Jesus taught us, saying…

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be Your name,

your Kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as in Heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins,

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial

and deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours

now and forever. Amen.

Offering

To give electronically please go to bpuc.org/give

Alternatively, there is an offering bowl near the lectern on the left-hand side as you exit the church.

Offering Prayer

Loving God, in gratitude for the knowledge that we can rest in your love, we bring these gifts and ourselves before you.
As those who know the love, joy and peace
of dwelling in your presence,
may these gifts and our lives
bring your love and rest to others.
Amen.

We sing: Community of Christ

  1. Community of Christ,
who make the Cross your own,
live out your creed and risk your life
    for God alone:
the God who wears your face,
    to whom all worlds belong,
whose children are of every race
    and every song.

  2. Community of Christ,
    look past the Church’s door
and see the refugee, the hungry,
    and the poor.
    Take hands with the oppressed,
    the jobless in your street,
take towel and water, that you wash
    your neighbour’s feet.

  3. Community of Christ,
through whom the word must sound –
cry out for justice and for peace
    the whole world round:
    disarm the powers that war
    and all that can destroy,
turn bombs to bread, and tears of
    anguish into joy.

  4. When menace melts away,
so shall God’s will be done,
the climate of the world be peace
    and Christ its Sun;
    our currency be love
    and kindliness our law,
our food and faith be shared as one
    for evermore.
